These 12 Movies Had Heroes So Bad They Made Villains Look Good
Not all movie heroes are noble, selfless or even remotely likable. Some protagonists are so selfish, reckless or downright awful that audiences start rooting for the villains instead. Whether they are morally bankrupt, completely incompetent or just plain insufferable, these so called “heroes” made the bad guys seem reasonable in comparison.
Daniel LaRusso – The Karate Kid (1984)

Daniel is supposed to be the underdog, but when you look closer, he often instigates the fights he gets into. He repeatedly antagonizes Johnny Lawrence and refuses to take responsibility for his actions. Many fans now argue that Johnny was not the real villain, Daniel was just a punk who needed a reality check.
Harry Potter – Harry Potter Series (2001-2011)

Harry might be “The Chosen One,” but that does not mean he is a good hero. He constantly ignores advice, gets his friends into dangerous situations and lets his reckless emotions drive his decisions. Meanwhile, Voldemort built an empire from nothing sure, it was evil, but at least he had a plan.
Katniss Everdeen – The Hunger Games (2012-2015)

Katniss starts as a reluctant hero, but by the final film, she is making decisions as cold as the people she fought against. She barely acknowledges the sacrifices made for her, manipulates Peeta’s feelings and ultimately ends up playing right into the hands of another corrupt leader. By the end, even President Snow seems to have a point about how she is being used.
Dr. Alan Grant – Jurassic Park (1993)

Sure, Alan Grant is a brilliant paleontologist, but does he ever actually do anything heroic? He brings kids into a deadly situation, fails to protect them multiple times and mostly just reacts to the chaos rather than stopping it. Meanwhile, the so called villain, John Hammond, only wanted to share the wonder of dinosaurs with the world, his execution was just… questionable.
Peter Parker – Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker goes from a charming underdog to an absolute menace in Spider-Man 3. He becomes arrogant, mistreats MJ, picks fights for no reason and somehow manages to be more embarrassing than any villain in the film. When the bad guys seem more composed and reasonable, you know the hero has lost his way.

Tony Stark – Iron Man (2008-2019)

Tony Stark is a billionaire genius, but let us not forget, he is also responsible for most of his own problems. His arrogance, recklessness and unchecked ego created half of the villains he ends up fighting. Loki, Ultron and even Thanos might not have been threats if Tony had just learned to think things through.

Elsa – Frozen (2013)

Elsa is painted as a misunderstood hero, but let us be honest, she nearly destroys an entire kingdom out of fear and stubbornness. Instead of trying to fix her mistakes, she runs away and sings about how she does not care anymore. Meanwhile, Prince Hans, the supposed villain, is at least trying to take control of a kingdom in crisis.
Ferris Bueller – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

Ferris is supposed to be the fun loving trickster we root for, but in reality, he is just a manipulative, self absorbed teenager. He drags his anxious best friend into trouble, lies to everyone and never faces any consequences. Meanwhile, Principal Rooney, the so called villain, is just trying to do his job.
Edward Cullen – Twilight (2008-2012)

Edward is not just a bad hero, he is a red flag in vampire form. He stalks Bella, watches her sleep without her knowing and tries to control every aspect of her life. In comparison, the Volturi may be ruthless, but at least they do not pretend their toxic behavior is romantic.

Jack Dawson – Titanic (1997)

Jack is charming, but he is also wildly irresponsible. He convinces Rose to abandon her entire life for a guy she just met, gets them into unnecessary trouble and ultimately refuses to even try to share the door. Meanwhile, Rose’s fiancé, Cal, might be a snob, but at least he had a plan for her future.
Dorothy Gale – The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Dorothy’s journey through Oz is magical, but let us not forget, she literally drops a house on someone and steals her shoes. Then she kills the woman’s sister and leaves Oz in ruins before skipping back home like nothing happened. Meanwhile, the Wicked Witch was just trying to get back her family heirloom.
Willy Wonka – Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971 & 2005)

Wonka is presented as an eccentric genius, but let us be real, he is a straight up psychopath. He endangers children, allows them to be maimed for minor misbehaviors and barely seems to care about their fates. In comparison, the kids might have been a little bratty, but at least they were not leading people to their doom.
