Movies often transport us to far off futures filled with advanced technology, dystopian societies and sci-fi innovations. However, some films have eerily predicted the course of real world events and technological developments, giving us a glimpse into the future. Whether it is social media, artificial intelligence or global surveillance, these 14 movies got it right, perhaps a little too accurately.
2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey introduced the concept of artificial intelligence with HAL 9000, a computer that can think, reason and even rebel. Today, we are increasingly relying on AI in everyday life, from virtual assistants like Siri to AI driven decision making in various industries. HAL’s malevolent nature might not have fully come to life yet, but AI’s presence in our world is undeniable.
Minority Report, 2002

This film is set in a future where crimes are prevented before they even happen, thanks to psychics. What is particularly eerie is how it predicted facial recognition technology, which is now commonplace in security and surveillance. The film’s portrayal of personalized ads based on individual traits is a spot on prediction of the targeted advertising that fills our digital lives today.
Blade Runner, 1982

The dystopian world of Blade Runner imagined a future where genetically engineered beings, or “replicants,” are created to serve humanity. Fast forward to today and genetic engineering, including CRISPR and lab grown organs, is rapidly progressing. While we are not yet building replicants, the ethical dilemmas surrounding biotechnology and artificial life are very much real.
The Terminator, 1984

In this film, the rise of a super intelligent AI, Skynet, leads to a war between humans and machines. The increasing development of autonomous weapons and AI controlled systems today echoes the film’s warnings about the potential consequences of technology outpacing human control. While we are not yet fighting machines, the trajectory of AI warfare is becoming a very real concern.
Gattaca, 1997

Gattaca portrays a future society where genetic engineering determines an individual’s fate and social status. With the rise of genetic testing, gene therapy and the potential for designer babies, the film’s concerns about genetic discrimination and the ethics of genetic modification have become increasingly relevant.
The Matrix, 1999

The idea that humans are living in a simulated reality controlled by machines was purely speculative in The Matrix. Today, however, as virtual reality, VR and augmented reality AR, technology evolve, the lines between physical and digital spaces are increasingly blurred, raising questions about what’s “real” and what is not.
Back to the Future Part II, 1989

In Back to the Future Part II, Marty McFly travels to 2015 and sees flying cars, video calls and self-lacing shoes. While flying cars have not yet become mainstream, the film’s prediction of flat screen TVs, video conferencing and even wearable tech like Nike’s self lacing shoes has proven incredibly accurate.
The Social Network, 2010

While The Social Network dramatizes the creation of Facebook, it also eerily foreshadows the massive influence of social media in shaping our personal lives and society. The film predicted the rise of data privacy concerns, the role of social media in global politics and the way platforms like Facebook could become all encompassing in modern life.

Children of Men, 2006

Set in a future where humans face infertility and societal collapse, Children of Men portrayed a world in which violence, surveillance and political unrest are rampant. Today, we see troubling global issues surrounding refugees, political instability and societal breakdown, closely mirroring the film’s grim portrayal of the future.
The Island, 2005

The Island imagines a world where clones are bred for organ harvesting and medical use by wealthy individuals. While cloning humans is not yet a reality, the ethical debates over cloning animals and organ harvesting are very much alive, with advances in stem cell research and cloning technology pointing to a future where such practices could become a moral dilemma.
I, Robot, 2004

In I, Robot, robots are integrated into society and the plot revolves around a robot breaking free from its programming. This film predicted the rise of autonomous robots, as today we have robots used in warehouses, hospitals and even some homes. The concerns raised about the dangers of programming autonomy and AI ethics continue to be discussed in real world technological circles.
Star Trek: The Next Generation, 1987-1994

Although a TV show rather than a movie, Star Trek: The Next Generation accurately predicted a number of technological advancements, such as tablet devices, voice activated assistants and even video calling. Many of the futuristic gadgets shown in the series now appear in our daily lives, making its predictions feel even more impressive.
WALL-E, 2008

The film WALL-E takes place in a future where Earth is abandoned due to pollution and waste and humans live in space, utterly reliant on technology. As concerns about climate change, plastic waste and environmental degradation grow, WALL-E’s apocalyptic vision of Earth’s future is starting to feel alarmingly plausible.
The Truman Show, 1998

In The Truman Show, the main character, Truman, unknowingly lives in a reality TV show that broadcasts his every move. With the rise of social media and the increasing obsession with reality TV and online surveillance, the movie’s portrayal of a world where privacy is lost and everything is watched feels closer to reality, especially in today’s hyper connected world.
