12 Iconic Films That Would Never Get Made Today
Hollywood has changed a lot over the years and some films that were once beloved classics would never make it past the script stage in today’s industry. Whether due to outdated social norms, controversial themes or industry shifts, these movies would likely face backlash, censorship or complete rejection if pitched now. Here are 12 iconic films that, for better or worse, would not survive modern Hollywood.
Blazing Saddles, 1974

Mel Brooks’ satirical Western is one of the boldest comedies ever made, taking jabs at racism, Hollywood tropes and political correctness with relentless, no holds barred humor. While it remains a comedy classic, its liberal use of racial slurs, even in the name of satire and its fearless approach to sensitive topics would make it nearly impossible to greenlight today. Even Brooks himself has admitted that Blazing Saddles could not be made in the modern era.
Gone with the Wind, 1939

A cinematic masterpiece of its time, Gone with the Wind is still revered for its storytelling and epic scale, but its romanticized portrayal of the Antebellum South has aged poorly. Many critics argue that it glosses over the horrors of slavery and presents a deeply problematic view of race relations. While still an important part of film history, it has been reevaluated through a much more critical lens in recent years.
Tropic Thunder, 2008

While Tropic Thunder is a satire that mocks Hollywood’s absurdities, its use of Robert Downey Jr. in blackface, as a method actor who takes his craft way too far, would likely be deemed unacceptable today. Though the film was self aware in its critique of the entertainment industry, the controversy surrounding that performance alone would shut down production before it even started. Modern audiences would struggle to separate satire from offense, making it a risky project.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, 1994

Jim Carrey’s slapstick comedy is still loved by fans, but one major plot point has aged terribly, its treatment of transgender identity. The film’s big twist, revealing that the villain is a transgender woman, played as a joke, has been widely criticized for promoting harmful stereotypes. If made today, this storyline would be considered offensive and insensitive, likely leading to a major rewrite.
The Birth of a Nation, 1915

Though widely recognized as one of the most influential films in cinematic history, The Birth of a Nation is also one of the most controversial due to its blatant racism and glorification of the Ku Klux Klan. Even in its own time, the film was met with protests, and in today’s climate, it would be condemned outright and never see the light of day. Its place in film history is undeniable, but its subject matter makes it impossible to remake.

Revenge of the Nerds, 1984

This ‘80s teen comedy about misfit geeks getting back at their bullies is filled with crude humor, but one particular scene crosses a major ethical line. A moment played for laughs involves a character disguising himself to trick a woman into sleeping with him, something that would now be considered assault. With modern discussions on consent and gender politics, this film would not just be rewritten, it would not be made at all.
Soul Man, 1986

In this comedy, a white student takes “tanning pills” to darken his skin and receive a scholarship intended for Black students, an outrageous premise that modern audiences would find deeply offensive. While the film attempted to comment on privilege and race, it ultimately played into harmful stereotypes and white savior narratives. There is no way a studio would touch this storyline in today’s climate.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s, 1961

While Breakfast at Tiffany’s remains a beloved romance, Mickey Rooney’s portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi, a Japanese landlord played in yellowface with exaggerated stereotypes, is undeniably offensive. Modern audiences rightfully call out such portrayals as racist caricatures and no studio would allow such casting today. If a remake were ever considered, that character would need a complete overhaul or be removed entirely.
Porky’s, 1981

This raunchy teen comedy was a major hit in the ‘80s, but its humor relies heavily on sexual harassment, voyeurism and objectification of women. Scenes that were once played for laughs would now be viewed as deeply inappropriate, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement. While sex comedies still exist, Porky’s particular brand of humor would not fly in today’s Hollywood.

The Human Centipede, 2009

While The Human Centipede was always designed to shock, its grotesque premise and extreme body horror would likely struggle to gain mainstream distribution today. With audiences becoming more critical of shock value horror and exploitative storytelling, even many hardcore horror fans would argue that the film is too excessive. Streaming services and theaters alike might hesitate to associate with something so controversially grotesque.
The Toy, 1982

This Richard Pryor comedy about a rich white boy who “buys” a Black man as his personal entertainer would never get past the pitch meeting today. The film attempts to address themes of racism and class, but its execution is tone deaf at best. The very concept of the film is so problematic that no amount of modern reworking could salvage it.
Natural Born Killers, 1994

Quentin Tarantino’s hyper violent film about two serial killers who become media sensations would likely be viewed as too dangerous in today’s world. Given the rise of mass shootings, concerns about media glorification of violence and shifting public attitudes toward extreme content, it is doubtful any major studio would take on such a project now. The film remains a cult classic, but its controversial themes would make it a tough sell today.
