Sorcerers Apprentice, the (2010) - Cheap Trick
| There is nothing magical about Jerry Bruckheimers take on The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The inane plot, completely unfunny dialogue and ham-fisted acting all adds up to one poorly executed spell.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice is one of those films that you can tell was put together not because someone had a story to tell but because they wanted to exploit some not so well thought out ideas. Let's bring the broom sequence from Fantasia to life. Let's put in some awesome special effects. Let's put in current "it" boy Jay Baruchel. Let's try to keep Nic Cage's career on life support. Hey we can do all this in one movie. It doesn't matter about the story so we'll just throw some stupid shit together. I imagine it took them one afternoon to come up with everything. Throw it together fast and look we've got a new brand we can sell along side the equally inane National Treasure series.
I've said this before in reviews. It isn't magical just because you say it is. The use of special effects does not necessarily make the audience believe in magic. Movie magic comes from a different place, from imagination, from inspiration. The Sorcerer's Apprentice has none of that. It has no magic. Just a lot of hoopla about nothing. It's only been a couple hours since I left the screening and I've already forgotten most of it.
