Joan Rivers a Piece of Work - Work Horse
| About 2 years ago, Joan Rivers was approached by documentarians Anne Sundberg and Ricki Stern to follow the trailblazing comedienne for a year in her life. What we are treated to is a revealing behind-the-scenes look at the ups and downs of this outspoken performer who, her whole life, struggled in all aspects of her professional life and longed to be taken seriously as an actress, but has been relegated to practically has-been status, or, one plastic surgery joke after another.
We discover that Ms. Rivers is a non-stop tireless work horse, at 75 years old. She says yes to virtually any ‘gig’ that comes in, be it at a comedy club in the Bronx or the ultimate exposure job (of late) for her, Celebrity Apprentice. Her biggest fear is not working and not being able to support the grand lifestyle to which she has become accustomed. But really, it’s the need to be wanted and her own insecurities where we see her true colors shine through, and her resilience over the years after being knocked down in a youth-driven industry, and getting back up over and over again.
The film is an interesting look at someone’s need to stay relevant in today’s entertainment world, and easily, the best film I’ve seen this year.
