I can't fully review the film as I do not speak Italian and the screening I saw did not have the benefit of subtitles or dubbing.

Having said that, I was quite blown away by Il Divo. It is a very visually striking film. Kinetic and lush, the film is remarkably gripping. Paolo Sorrentino crafts a gorgeous narrative out of this political and crime drama. The film is bombastic. He throws the story at his audience and overwhelms us. While his camera is often in motion, he knows just when to hold it still and focus, intensly, on a subtle moment. It is masterfully crafted.

Regardless of language, the film grabs you, shakes you around a little and offers a lush portrait. I am certain I would have got more from the film if I had understood the dialogue but Sorrentino manages to convey so much visually that it was completely satisfying without.

And the film features the magnificent Fanny Ardant who has far too little screen time but is also mesmerizing in any language.

Search out a screening translated into your language and Il Divo will rock you.
