Food Inc. is another compelling and shocking examination of how the pursuit of profit continues to damage the things we value about society and even contributes to the death of people. I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about food industry issues and I was still surprised as the depth of the problems we are facing. It's enough to make you want to fast.

Our religious devotion to capitalism doesn't allow us to make choices for the benefit of society and Food Inc. is a perfect illustration of this. Dramatically made, Food Inc. dissects the modern western food system with a scalpel, getting to the heart of the issues quickly in a manner that is both compelling and convincing.

One of the things the movie highlights well is how pervasive these issues are. It's about food but it speaks so much about poverty, exploitation, disease, corruption and corporate greed. In some ways the film's only flaw is in its lack of hope. Where are the solutions? Where is the alternative? There is some of this, and I appreciate that it is realistic in not toppling capitalism but influencing it in positive ways. Still, more of a focus on solutions may have made the film even stronger.

Food Inc. manages to cover a wide range of topics without feeling rushed or dumbing things down. Instead it manages to make its critique plainly and convincingly. It helps to get information out to those who need it and makes it accessible. It is an example of how ignorance isn't bliss and how this danger is important to be exposed. If this was breaking news at 6:00 o'clock would these issues be more public knowledge? Would a film like this be necessary? My question is then, why isn't this making headlines? What interest do newsrooms have in not reporting on this stuff?

See the film and look to ways of looking at food more responsibly. Don't look at it as a burden but as an opportunity, an opportunity to feed your family better and leave a better legacy for your children.

On a side note, I am always surprised when conservatives seem surprised when reckless fiscal anarchy and deregulation lead to Dickens-esque horror scenarios. What do they expect?
